This week, Commanders wide receiver and punt returner Jaylin Lane has been nominated for the Pepsi Zero NFL Rookie of the Week award for his outstanding play in the team’s dominant Week 3 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders to remain undefeated for the season at Northwest Stadium.
This is a great chance for Commanders fans to spread the love and show appreciation for the rookie 4th round draft pick out of Virginia Tech whom Adam Peters described as the best punt returner in the draft.

Jaylin Lane has now made his mark on the NFL. Coming out of college, he wasn’t the biggest name on the draft board, but his impressive athleticism and playmaking ability caught the attention of several teams. Ultimately, he found his home with the Commanders, where they’ve been slowly but surely integrating him into their offensive plans while relying on him as the team’s punt returner — a skill that he’s developed under the tutelage of Special Teams coordinator Larry Izzo, but also with input from should-be Hall of Fame former Redskins return man Brian Mitchell, whose influence is observable in Lane’s focus on getting north-south with immediate explosion.
Lane’s trajectory looks promising. Though he’s still developing as a receiver, fans have definitely taken notice of his work ethic and positive attitude, which bodes well for his continued growth. Most notably, this week, Lane played a pivotal role in the Commanders’ big win on Sunday when he turned a Las Vegas punt from the Raiders’ 34-yard line into a 90-yard touchdown.
Per ESPN, through 3 weeks, Lane leads the NFL in total punt return yardage and 3rd in average yards per return.
He actually returned 5 punts against the Raiders, amassing 127 total return yards on the day. On the 4 returns that didn’t result in touchdowns, Lane averaged 9.25 yards per return. His overall average on the day was 25.4 yards per return.
