Von Miller’s place on the roster is perilous entering the 2025 Buffalo Bills offseason.
The Buffalo Bills brought Von Miller to the team in an effort to add a high-value closer to the defensive side of the ball. Miller’s experience in big games with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams was an asset, but in his biggest game with the Bills, he was not a factor.
Against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, Miller played only 16 snaps. He had one tackle.
Scheduled to make more than $17 million in 2025, it’s probably likely at this point that Miller won’t be back. He took a pay cut to stay in 2024 (down to $12.5 million), giving up guaranteed money he did not have to give back, so perhaps there is a route for him to stay on the team in a similar situation this season. Bills general manager Brandon Beane mentioned that pay cut in his post-season press conference when discussing Miller.
“I thought this year you started to see Von return to form, made some plays, made some sacks, look more like himself,” Beane said Thursday. “I’m sure he would like some opportunities back the other night to get [Patrick] Mahomes down. Those guys did a nice job. It’s not just one thing, but we always want to be strong upfront.”
Buffalo is currently over the projected 2025 salary cap by somewhere between $7 and $8 million, and releasing Miller saves them $8.4 million. They’d immediately be cap-compliant.
The other option is another salary cut from Miller. If, for instance, he wanted to take an $8.4 million salary cut to remain on the team for the same cap number as if he was released, it would serve a lot of different purposes and better fit his current role on the team.
We won’t see anything soon on this, but once the NFL Combine finishes up in February and into early March, we will start seeing moves like this around the league. It was March 6th of last year that Miller took his pay cut.
