Vikings Targeting Training Camp Return For DT Caleb Banks

Caleb Banks faced injury concerns leading up to the draft, but that did not result in a long wait on Day 1 before his name was called. Banks has nevertheless yet to take part in offseason practices.

While recovering from surgery on his fractured toe, Banks has been an observer so far in spring work. Padded practices will of course not begin until training camp kicks off in July. By that point, Alec Lewis of the Athletic notes, Minnesota aims to have Banks back to full strength.

There is time for things to change as the result of a setback. Nonetheless, head coach Kevin O’Connell said (via ESPN’s Kevin Seifert) Banks should be available at the start of training camp. Having him in place for all padded work along with the preseason would of course be critical for the Florida product’s development. A notable role can be expected for Banks during his rookie campaign after the Vikings cut Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave in March.

Minnesota has since added Eric Johnson and Isaiahh Loudermilk to the fold in terms of depth defensive line options. Regardless of how they fare this summer, though, Banks managing to earn a significant role right away would be key for Brian Flores‘ defense. The unit currently faces uncertainty in the secondary with safety Harrison Smith‘s future still unclear along with a potential lack of depth along the defensive front.

Despite his injury issues, Banks was the top defensive tackle selected in the 2026 draft. It will be interesting to see if he can acclimate to the NFL in short order or if the Vikings find themselves in the market for veteran depth at the DT spot this summer.
