A small roster move on this Wednesday
With the first preseason game rapidly approaching, the Minnesota Vikings have made a move to shake things up at the bottom of the secondary depth chart a little bit.
The team has announced that they have signed safety Gervarrius Owens. In order to make room for him on the roster, the Vikings have waived linebacker Max Tooley.
Owens was a seventh-round pick of the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Houston. He actually started his college career with the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Golden Norsemen, which might be my new pick for the best team name in college football. That might be slightly biased, though.
Owens had a pretty solid career at Houston, garnering First-Team All-AAC honors in 2021 and Second-Team honors in 2022. He spent the 2023 season mainly on the Giants’ practice squad, appearing in three games and recording a fumble recovery. He was then waived by the Giants and signed by the Tennessee Titans. He appeared in two games for the Titans last season.
According to Pro Football Reference, Owens has played just one snap on defense in his brief NFL career, with the rest of his appearances coming on special teams.
Tooley started last season with the Houston Texans’ practice squad and was signed to the Vikings’ practice squad in early September. He has yet to appear in an NFL game.
Not an earth-shaking roster move, but we wanted to make sure you were informed of it in any case.
