The Minnesota Vikings have been busy on this Sunday morning, but it appears as though their quarterback room is locked and loaded ahead of the final roster cutdown on Tuesday afternoon.
After bringing him in for a workout on Saturday, the Vikings officially agreed to terms with quarterback Carson Wentz on Sunday. The team also released journeyman Brett Rypien, who had been with the team last season and through this preseason.
We went over Wentz’s resume in our initial report about his workout, so we won’t rehash it here. Sufficient to say, he appears to be another potential project for Kevin O’Connell to revive after bouncing around the league for the last four seasons. The physical talent is obviously there with Wentz, but we’ll have to see how O’Connell gets the best out of him like he did out of Sam Darnold last season.
The financial terms of Wentz’s deal were not immediately made available.
Rypien was always going to be the #3 quarterback on the depth chart at best, but his rocky performance in the preseason coupled with the performance of undrafted rookie Max Brosmer meant that the writing was on the proverbial wall for him as we await roster cuts.
These moves, along with the trading of Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles, means that the Vikings are going ahead with a quarterback room of J.J. McCarthy, Max Brosmer, and Carson Wentz. I would assume that Wentz will be QB3 while he gets familiar with the offense and everything else, with Brosmer serving as the primary backup to McCarthy. I could be wrong on that, but that permutation makes sense to me.
So, what does everyone think of the Vikings officially bringing aboard the former #2 overall pick to be a part of the quarterback depth chart?
