These days, Minnesota Vikings standout Kyler Murray is locked in a quarterback battle. And perhaps it will be a career-lifting path. But Murray took a side journey Monday, sending a special shoutout to Oklahoma baseball after its College World Series win, according to his post on X.
“Long time coming… Shout out Skip and the boys on bringing home the National Championship!”
The Sooners steamrolled North Carolina by a score of 13-2 in the deciding game of the best-of-three championship series. Murray played for the Sooners eight seasons ago, hitting 10 homers with 47 RBIs and batting .296.
The Athletics thought enough of Murray to spend the No. 9 overall pick on him in the 2018 MLB Draft. The risk of Murray never playing baseball was worth it, A’s scouting director Eric Kubota said at the time, according to MLB.com.
“I think, as a staff, we just felt like Kyler was a unique talent, and it’s something that you come across rarely in what we do,” Kubota said. “The risk of the football was, in our opinion, outweighed by the upside on the baseball field. We were totally on board with his desire to play quarterback at Oklahoma. Frankly, we’re kind of excited to be an Oklahoma fan for 12 games.”
However, the Arizona Cardinals picked Murray with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. And that ended his baseball career.
Who knows what Murray could have been on the diamond? He has been a standout quarterback at times, winning the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2019. He made back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in 2020-21.
But since then, his game has trailed off. Injuries played a key role, limiting him to 11 games in 2022, eight games in 2023, and just five games last year. The Vikings are banking on him remaining healthy. He’s currently locked in a quarterback battle with JJ McCarthy.
