The Minnesota Vikings will be an exciting team to watch during training camp. Minnesota will have a quarterback battle between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray for the team’s starting job. One Vikings insider recently wrote about an underrated aspect of that battle.
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert emptied his notebook after Vikings minicamp in his latest article. He shared some interesting observations about how the personality of each Vikings QB could influence their upcoming position battle.
If it is simply a battle of personalities, McCarthy has a huge advantage.
“But the disparity also supported what’s obvious about both of their personalities: McCarthy is a vibrant connector, while Murray has a quieter disposition,” Seifert wrote.
McCarthy has a leg up by playing with his teammates over the past few years. Meanwhile, Murray is adapting to a new situation and is on the quieter side, as Seifert noted.
But Minnesota’s quarterback battle won’t be a popularity contest. Head coach Kevin O’Connell will ultimately choose whichever quarterback will give the team the best chance to win games.
“Players won’t get much of a say in O’Connell’s final decision, if any, and their personal feelings are minimally relevant to who is best equipped to run the Vikings’ offense,” Seifert added. “None of the players who spoke with reporters during the five open offseason sessions expressed a favorite. Jefferson went out of his way to say he planned to work with both quarterbacks during his summer break.”
Perhaps Seifert’s comments are more relevant to team chemistry than who will actually become the team’s starter.
“But just as a function of time spent together, all of them know and understand McCarthy better than they do Murray. Take that for what it’s worth,” Seifert concluded.
Either way, it will be fascinating to watch this quarterback battle during training camp later this summer.
