During the Week 16 matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions on Sunday, Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf took a swing at a Lions fan in the stands. Metcalf was subsequently suspended by the NFL for the final two games of the 2025 regular season.
On Monday, it was reported that DK Metcalf’s suspension could prove to be far more costly than just two game checks, as reports indicate that being suspended for “conduct detrimental” to the league voids “at least $45 million in future guaranteed money.”

“His four-year, $132 million contract from March, reviewed by CBS Sports, notes that if he ‘fails… to practice or play with the Club for any reason,’ which includes ‘Player’s suspension by the NFL or Club for Conduct Detrimental,’ his guarantees ‘will be NULL AND VOID.’ Metcalf would still be able to earn that money over the next two years.”
The fan involved in the DK Metcalf incident has issued a statement through his attorney, denying accusations that he used racial slurs or misogynistic language.

While Metcalf claimed that the fan used a racial slur to provoke him, the fan has denied that allegation. A new video taken from the stands, however, seems to suggest that it was, in fact, the fan’s goal to provoke Metcalf. Although that does not excuse Metcalf’s actions, it does perhaps confirm that the fan was intentionally provoking him.

Metcalf will be appealing his suspension, which, if upheld, would see him miss the the Steelers’ final two games of the regular season against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens.
If Metcalf misses the final two games of the campaign, he’ll close out the 2025 regular season with 59 catches for 850 yards and 6 touchdowns.
