Drake Maye didn’t stay on top of the NFL MVP betting odds for long.
The New England Patriots quarterback ascended as a betting favorite to win MVP after leading a Week 10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Maye played well in Thursday night’s victory against the New York Jets, but the second-year pro still watched a veteran leapfrog him in the odds.
As of Monday, Matthew Stafford is the +135 favorite over Maye (+175) to take home MVP honors on FanDuel Sportsbook. Josh Allen is third at +450 after accounting for six touchdowns on Sunday.
The field appears to be narrowing down, as Jonathan Taylor is next all the way at +900. Patrick Mahomes (+2000) may have dropped too far down the race after the Kansas City Chiefs fell to 5-5 with a Week 11 loss to the Denver Broncos.
Maye didn’t receive much credit for completing 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown against a 2-8 Jets squad that traded defensive stars Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. On the other hand, Stafford led the Los Angeles Rams to a monumental NFC West win over the Seattle Seahawks.
It’s nevertheless odd timing for the MVP odds to change, as Stafford notched his lowest single-game completion percentage (53.6) and yards per attempt average (4.6) of the season. However, he still tossed two touchdowns in a 21-19 victory.
Stafford trails Maye in most efficiency metrics, but he has a superior 27 touchdown passes and two interceptions to Maye’s 20 touchdowns and five picks. The 8-2 Rams are looking like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, so the 37-year-old is firmly in the MVP conversation with seven weeks remaining.
