Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Tre Flowers, has cleared waivers after his release by the team on Monday, according to the NFL transactions page for Tuesday.
Flowers, 30, is now a free agent and is free to sign with any team. He can also sign with the Steelers’ practice squad, if they so desire. The team made an opening on their practice squad on Tuesday by releasing veteran tackle David Sharpe. Former Steelers practice squad cornerback Daryl Porter Jr., who was released in December, was signed by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday.
Flowers was signed to the 53-man active roster on Christmas Day, taking the roster spot of wide receiver DK Metcalf. Metcalf was reinstated from his suspension on Monday, and the team has a full 53-man roster entering the postseason.
Flowers, a 6-foot-3, 203-pound cornerback, appeared in one game for the Steelers, against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 28, playing on two snaps of special teams.
Before his time with the Steelers, has been with the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions this season, playing in two games with Detroit in October.
Originally a fifth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks out of Oklahoma State in 2018, Flowers spent his four seasons in Seattle. He started as a rookie for the Seahawks in 2018 and 2019, before losing his starting job in the 2020 season. His best statistical year came in 2019, when he recorded 82 tackles, two for a loss, two quarterback hits, eight passes defended, three interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
In 2021, Flowers was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals, and spent two seasons with the Bengals, primarily serving as specialist defender, covering tight ends. He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, spending the entire season there.
In 2024, he split time between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts, appearing in a total of five games.
The Steelers had been running short at cornerback over the last two weeks, with James Pierre and Brandin Echols both missing time with injury. Both players returned in Sunday Night’s Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
