As if it weren’t abundantly clear already, Urban Meyer is leaving no doubts as to how he feels about former rival head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Meyer and Harbaugh didn’t exactly have a friendly relationship when the two were coaching opposite each other at Ohio State and Michigan. Now it appears that icy relationship has continued long after Meyer has stepped away from the football field.
Back in May, Meyer called for Harbaugh to be suspended for life from college football for his role in Michigan’s controversial sign-stealing scandal. Ultimately, Meyer nearly got his wish.
Harbaugh, who is 61 yeahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0ttlghkt34&list=PLQMRKOm82woLMFuyPY5gYPxUdchNrco_Srs old, received a 10-year show-cause penalty as part of the penalties handed down by the NCAA to the University of Michigan and any associated coaches. That’s on top of the four-year show-cause penalty Harbaugh is already serving.
That means that Harbaugh, in effect, couldn’t return to coaching at the NCAA level until 2038, when he would be 74 years old. But that’s not enough for Meyer.
After winning a national championship at Michigan, Harbaugh did the smart thing and ran for the hills. He took the Los Angeles Chargers head coaching job in 2024 and went 11-6 in his first season.

Meyer, however, believes that Harbaugh shouldn’t be able to so easily skirt responsibility for Michigan’s organized cheating scheme.
“There’s an elephant in the room here that no one’s talking about,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast. “When Jim Tressel was fired by Ohio State and he was given a suspension. Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League, came out and said that we’re going to honor that suspension. [Tressel] went to the Indianapolis Colts to work in the replay room. The Colts, because of the respect they had for the NCAA and the suspension, suspended Jim Tressel, so he was unable to perform his duties for the first six games of the year.”
Meyer makes a good point. Tressel was fired from his job at Ohio State for overseeing the program during “Tattoo-gate” in the early 2010s. He then took a consulting job with the Colts and faced suspension. That’s despite the fact that the Ohio State scandal didn’t sniff the level of severity of the one at Michigan.
Meyer added that he doesn’t think Roger Goodell will do anything about Harbaugh. But he’d be completely justified if he did.
