An old tweet from 2018 has picked up some traction this week following suspect Shane Tamura opening fire in a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, killing four people and critically wounding another.
The 27-year-old eventually shot himself, leaving behind a note requesting his brain to be studied because he believed he had CTE.
Tamura was born in Hawaii but raised in Santa Clarita, California. He attended Golden Valley High School and transferred to Granada Hills for his senior year in 2015, earning a reputation as a standout running back.
The aforementioned tweet, shared in January 2018, suggests he was off the grid for years, with an account pleading for help to find him and someone else named Terry Tamura.

The posting account,@ChefBoyarLeee, said they were “In need of dire help. Please just retweet so I can get some eyes and ears out everywhere. Last known area SAN FERNADO VALLEY,” mentioning celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, and Barack Obama.

This is pretty mysterious, as the person in the photo looks like Shane Tamura, while the tweet was definitely posted well over seven years ago.
Still, there’s no formal record of him being missing, with no missing persons report, police bulletin, or statement from his family to suggest his whereabouts were unknown.
One theory is that Tamura went dark on social media or cut ties with certain people. His behavior back then may have been a sign of the decline in mental health that culminated in Monday’s shooting, but then he also uprooted his life in L.A. and headed to Nevada.
Tamura is believed to have relocated to Las Vegas sometime after high school. He likely made the move in the late 2010s, but it’s clear that he was established there by 2022, given that he was living in a gated community and owned a Nevada concealed firearms permit.
