Crossing Broad
This isn’t a catch. Incredible effort, but the ball hits the ground at 31 seconds into this clip:
The Eagles ended up holding on 4th and goal in what amounted to a karmic defensive stop, but it left them with hideous field position. They ended up going three and out and having to punt back to the Bills after creating just enough breathing room to get off a kick.
This play wasn’t reviewed because Buffalo ran up to the line of scrimmage and quickly got a snap off. Maybe the Eagles video team was looking at it, maybe not. Second half timeouts are valuable currency, but in this case you could possibly justify throwing the challenge flag as a coin flip on a 32-yard explosive that pinned your defense back.
On the flipside, Buffalo challenged this DeVonta Smith catch and it was overturned:
Not sure about you, but from that angle it looks like Smitty keeps his hands under the ball. It does move when his gloves hit the ground, but it doesn’t seem like he loses control. The Birds also got hosed earlier when a deep shot for A.J. Brown was clear DPI and the whistle wasn’t blown.
Thankfully the Birds’ defense showed up in a big way. The Eagles may not have deserved to win that game, but they came out with a 13-12 victory battling a three-front war against the Buffalo Bills, the refs, and Kevin Patullo’s playcalling.
