The New Orleans Saints selected quarterback Tyler Shough out of the University of Louisville in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. They did so despite the fact that Shedeur Sanders was still available.

Shough was chosen to immediate compete for the starting role in the Big Easy. Early reviews from Saints training camp, however, have been discouraging.

Those reports have offered validation to those that criticized the franchise at the time of the selection. Can Shough change the narrative?

Who is Tyler Shough?

The passer spent seven seasons at the college level while playing for three different programs. His career began at Oregon where he appeared in 15 games and threw for 1,703 yards.

Shough then moved onto Texas Tech, adding another 2,922 yards to his passing total over three years.

The signal caller ended his tenure in the NCAA at Louisville. There, he recorded his best college season, notching 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

Now, the soon-to-be 26-year-old passer is competing for a starting role in the NFL. He was the third quarterback chosen in the most recent draft.

Can he be the Saints starting quarterback?

Given his age and draft standing, most believe he’ll be given every opportunity to take the reins. He’s currently battling Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener in the QB room.

Rattler has experience with the Saints, though he went 0-6 as a starter while filling in for an injured Derek Carr as a rookie. Haener went 0-1 in his 2024 season while appearing in eight games.

Carr is no longer a part of the organization. Rattler and Haener remain unproven. It seems the perfect situation for Tyler Shough to take charge.

Unfortunately, he’s reportedly struggled during Saints training camp. Early feedback on his play has been largely negative.

I’ve said the words risk-averse a lot when it comes to Tyler Shough. This and the next post were back-to-back reps with no pass rush. #Saints pic.twitter.com/rift7d6QdA

Shough has taken the majority of the first-team reps thus far, but it seems Rattler has been more impressive on the field. Questions were raised after a recent switch-up in the quarterback rotation in Week 2.

“The biggest surprise from Wednesday’s session was how the Saints are divvying up reps at quarterback,” wrote WWL Louisiana. “Second-round draft pick Tyler Shough saw very limited action, working almost exclusively with the third team and throwing only a handful of passes.

“Spencer Rattler continues to look like the most polished of the group.”

The lineup change could be nothing. It could be something. It’s still too early in the QB battle to tell.

Shedeur Sanders supporters, however, are taking a bit of a victory lap upon hearing the news.

Tyler Shough’s struggles validate criticism surrounding Shedeur Sanders mistake.

Tyler Shough drafted ahead of Shedeur Sanders????? Nope. Nope. Nope.
