Wide receiver Tyler Lockett has reportedly asked the Tennessee Titans to release him after just seven games playing for Nashville’s football team. Adam Schefter reports that Lockett will be a free agent on Wednesday, October 22 at 4 p.m. EDT.
Should this news interest the Buffalo Bills? There’s more than a few opinions about what ails the Bills, a team looking to rebound from a two-game skid and fresh off their bye. Among those looking for ways to improve Buffalo’s offense, there’s a belief that adding another wide receiver (or more) will help a passing game struggling with consistency and game-breaking play through six games.
An 11-year veteran, Lockett is now 33 years old and in the twilight of his career. Lockett had only started one game with the Titans, and managed just 10 catches (21 targets) for 70 yards. The numbers don’t stand out for a wide receiver who once terrorized defenses playing with Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.
Lockett had 894 receiving yards or better in consecutive seasons from 2018 through 2023, which included four straight seasons of 1,033 yards or more (2019-2022). He was just 35 yards away from a 1,000-yard campaign in 2018.
It’s clear Lockett isn’t interested in playing subpar football, which is exactly what the 1-6 Titans offer Lockett in 2025. Yet they also handed him a one-year, $4 million deal with potential to earn up to $6 million total this season. Tennessee gave Lockett $3.49 million in guaranteed money, which leaves just $510,000 in non-guaranteed money as part of his base contract.
Is that going to be what it takes for another interested team to sign Lockett? Will he instead look for a return home to Seattle, where he spent the first 10 years of his NFL career? It will be interesting to see what becomes of Lockett’s NFL future later this week.
