Tyjae Spears limped off after a carry in last night’s Tennessee Titans preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was reportedly carted to the locker room. The team called it a “lower leg injury.” Today, Turron Davenport is reporting that it is a high ankle sprain:
It hasn’t been reported yet how long Spears will be out, but high ankle sprains usually take about four to six weeks for recovery. That means Spears probably won’t be ready for the Titans’ opener against the Denver Broncos. There is a chance that he could start the season on injured reserve, which means he would have to miss the first four weeks, but that probably won’t be necessary.
Spears was having a great camp by all accounts. Injuries have been an issue for him throughout his young career. You might remember that Spears doesn’t have an ACL in one of his knees because of past injuries.
The Titans were expected to have a pretty good two-headed monster at running back with Spears and Tony Pollard. That now won’t take shape until after the start of the season. Julius Chestnut, who always looks good in August, has a better chance of making the roster now. This will also give 2025 sixth-round pick Kalel Mullings more touches in the training camp and the preseason.
Spears has 184 carries for 765 yards and six touchdowns through his first two seasons with the Titans.
