The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without to key starters for an extended period of time.
The Pittsburgh Steelers left Dublin, Ireland with a 24-21 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, but it seems to have come at a cost.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, cornerback Jalen Ramsey and wide receiver Calvin Austin III are both expected to miss at least several games after suffering injuries on Sunday.
Ramsey went down in the third quarter while covering Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison. He grabbed his left hamstring, exited the field limping and was looked at by trainers.
The three-time first-team All-Pro did attempt to return to the game, but he was unable to, signaling the injury was worse than previously thought.
Ramsey has been one of the Steelers’ best players on defense, recording 14 tackles, four passes defensed and one interception through the first four games of the season.
Austin then suffered a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter and quickly left the field, after which he was taken to a local hospital for imaging. Croke Park, unlike most NFL stadiums, does not have in-stadium x-ray capacity.
Head coach Mike Tomlin said Austin was being further evaluated at the hospital following the game. It turns out his injury is also more serious.
Luckily for Pittsburgh, the team is heading into its bye week. It provides the perfect time for players to get healthy, but it still looks like Ramsey and Austin will need more than just the bye to return to the field.
In the meantime, the Steelers will have to rely on cornerbacks Darius Slay, Joey Porter Jr. and Brandin Echols as well as wide receivers Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek to help fill the voids left by Ramsey and Austin.
