The Washington Commanders aren’t loaded with running back depth, but their reported willingness to move starter Brian Robinson Jr. is something the New England Patriots might have their eye on.
Not necessarily because the Patriots should pursue Robinson. Rather, a Robinson trade could set a market for running back moves ahead of cutdown day, and it might give New England a trade partner.
Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson has starred in training camp and preseason games, putting Rhamondre Stevenson’s role in jeopardy. It would be a gamble to lean heavily on Henderson and Antonio Gibson, but Stevenson’s name has been kicked around as one in need of a big 2025 — an indication of his standing in the organization right now.
Robinson rushed for 799 yards last season across 14 games last season, scoring eight touchdowns while also catching 20 passes for 159 yards. Stevenson, who has one more year of NFL experience, had 801 yards rushing with seven touchdowns across 15 games.
If the Commanders manage to get anything of consequence, even a Day 3 pick, for Robinson, it might be incentive for the Patriots to try getting something for Stevenson and move on. Of course, Stevenson struggling last season — just in time for his four-year extension to kick in — makes him harder to trade than Robinson, who is on an expiring deal.
However, if a team thinks last year was an aberration for Stevenson, maybe the Patriots find a willing trade partner — which takes us to the second reason.
Perhaps the Commanders are that trade partner.
It is a little curious that Washington is said shopping Robinson, a productive player, with no obvious replacement. That lends itself to the possibility that they think they can upgrade at the position.
If the Commanders believe a Stevenson rebound is in play, then perhaps moving Robinson and taking on Stevenson, even with his contract, becomes more attractive. Of the two, Stevenson has a more demonstrated track record of NFL success, including a 1,000-yard rushing season.
Ultimately, the Patriots probably benefit from going through this year with Stevenson on the roster. Still, the Robinson situation could be enough to perk the Patriots’ ear.
