Tuesday Cheese Curds: Packers start making cuts

Buckle up, folks, it’s cutdown day.

The news is going to come fast and furious today as the Packers trim their roster to 53 players, and already the news has begun to roll in: Brian Gutekunst made his first moves of the day early, releasing offensive lineman J.J. Lippe and tight end Johnny Lumpkin as he begins the arduous process of getting down to the roster limit. But you’d know that if you were following along with our cut tracker.

The deadline is 4 p.m. Eastern time today, and there’s a lot of work to be done. I say this every year, but I hope Gutekunst is in absolute agony today. I hope it’s excruciatingly difficult for him to get down to 53 players, because that means the Packers have a strong roster, and strong rosters are really only built through difficult compromises.

And for that matter, I also hope things are difficult for him because it’s a difficult day for the players, too. A lot of NFL dreams are dying today. That’s part of the game, but it doesn’t mean we have to like it. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears have been shed for players to get to this point, and today represents the end of the line for many players throughout the league.

It’s a hard day, but a necessary one, and hopefully the Packers come through stronger for it. Of course, this isn’t the end — roster building never stops, and there will be a bunch more transactions and changes and developments as Gutekunst continues to tweak and refine the roster as the season wears on.

For now, though, there’s a lot of work to be done.
