The Packers start the run to the 2025 season ahead of the curve.
The Packers have been in the offseason for a while now, courtesy of their Wildcard Round exit at the hands of the eventual Super Bowl champs. But now the final pair of teams has joined the Packers in the run-up to the 2025 season; one will have a parade this week, and the other gets to have arguments about whether it’s worse to get blown out in the Super Bowl or in the Wildcard Round.
Ostensibly, everybody’s equal now. Or they will be when the new league year starts in March. The records are wiped, the stats are reset, and everyone is getting ready to make the arduous climb back to the top of the NFL mountain. In theory, as of the end of the game on Sunday night, everybody’s a contender now.
In fact, we know that’s not the case. There’s a good chunk of the league that’s already functionally out of the running for the 2025 season for any number of reasons. Maybe their rebuild hasn’t gotten going yet. Maybe their roster is so old and decrepit they can’t do anything but try to get out of cap hell. Maybe they’re the Chicago Bears. Who knows?
But I don’t think the Packers are one of those teams. There’s every reason to believe the Packers could make a run in 2025. Sure, they bowed out in the Wildcard Round this year, but they’ve got a firm roster foundation, cap liquidity, and a good set of coaches to guide the ship. Maybe they don’t look like a juggernaut now, but it’s February and a lot can change over the next few months. And shoot, this season was hardly full of juggernauts, either.
The point is, the Packers are in decent shape heading into the offseason. Maybe that doesn’t add up to Super Bowl contention next year, but they’re already ahead of a lot of the rest of the league.
Overall roster status: pretty good.
Jacobs came in and did exactly what the Packers wanted him to do.
Including this one only for the bonkers suggestion that the Packers might possibly be interested in an Aaron Rodgers reunion.
There is going to be some crazy roster turnover for a few teams in the NFL this offseason.
Allow yourself a little sip of haterade this morning as we continue to bask in the Chiefs’ meltdown.
Honestly, I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more.
