The Packers don’t have a clear road forward with their consistently injured corner.
The reality of the Packers’ cornerback situation is this: Jaire Alexander has really never been healthy.
Sure, he’s been more healthy in the past than he’s been lately, but in the entirety of his NFL career, Alexander has only been on the field for a full slate of games twice.
The first came in 2019, his second season in the NFL — now more than half a decade ago. The second was in 2022, and that season comes with an asterisk. While Alexander was on the field for 16 games that year, he missed one due to a late-season suspension.
But that’s it. Dating back to college, Alexander regularly missed games due to injury. Being healthy is the outlier, and the Packers signed him to an extension after the 2021 season fully aware of that reality.
So what changed? The price tag for a missed game certainly went up after his extension, and the rate at which he’s missed games has gone up as well. At a point, the cost/benefit dynamic shifts firmly away from the Packers, who certainly want what’s best for Alexander, injury-wise, but aren’t running a charity. They need him on the field or he’s going to be out of town.
The rub is that if Alexander does end up out of Green Bay, the Packers are looking at a huge renovation project at corner. Keisean Nixon might view himself as CB1, but I’m not sure the Packers agree, and CB2 and CB3 are even less settled. Are eight games of Jaire Alexander better than rolling into 2025 with thoughts and prayers at two of your top corner spots?
Alexander’s time in Green Bay might be coming to an end in the near future.
My dreams are a little bigger than PFF lays out here, but it’s a good start.
A perfect offseason looks like it’s not going to include Tee Higgins.
Williams might be a nice piece to add to the Packers’ defensive front, but there are some drawbacks, too.
The newest member of the Packers’ Fan Hall of Fame didn’t miss a home game for more than 60 years.
If you’re looking for a new hobby for 2025, here’s an option.
