Tuesday Cheese Curds: Packers dive into final stretch of training camp

Just like that, the Packers are down to their last couple of training camp practices before their attention fully shifts to the regular season.

Already the work is underway for their Week 1 game against the defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions, but the team needs to tidy up some roster questions first. There’s just the pesky process of handling enough cuts and injured reserve designations to get the Packers down to their 53-man roster limit, then signing enough to guys to fill out a 16-man practice squad.

You know, simple stuff. At least with half the team injured, it makes the process much easier, right?

But on top of that, there is the aforementioned work for the Lions in Week 1. The Lions have been no stranger to the injury bug themselves, but they’re sure to present a challenge in the first game of the season. I know I wanted the Packers to open the season at home, but a date with a team as talented and well-coached as the Lions is not exactly what I had in mind. Injuries aside, the Packers still have that matchup looming as they work through their roster decisions over the next week.

It all has to go down by 4 p.m. eastern time on Tuesday, August 26. After that, the long march through the regular season truly begins.
