Sorry, Matt LaFleur, this week’s game is at least a little bit about Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers’ head coach can downplay the fact that the guy who won four MVPs and a Super Bowl with the Packers is now on the opposing sideline, but it doesn’t detract from the significance of the matchup. Rodgers is inextricably linked to the Packers. He might be the best player to ever lace ‘em up in Green Bay. Pretending to not acknowledge his significance is stupid.
And, perhaps more importantly, Rodgers is still capable of torching teams through the air. It doesn’t matter what he’s done for the Packers historically if he’s capable of taking them apart right now.
He leads the league in touchdown percentage, having thrown four touchdowns twice already this year, and his adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A – one of the best single metrics for measuring QB performance) is 6.97 — the highest of any non-MVP season of Rodgers’ career since 2017.
Rodgers, at the very least, is capable of identifying and exploiting weaknesses in the Packers’ secondary, and there are weaknesses to be found. One of those weaknesses even has a name: Nate Hobbs. LaFleur meekly defended Hobbs in his Monday press conference, saying he expects the 2025 free agent signing to bounce back, and he’d better, because a motivated, spiteful Rodgers playing at a fairly high level will definitely be keeping an eye on the struggling Hobbs.
With apologies to LaFleur, this game does very much hinge on Aaron Rodgers.
