The Tua Tagovailoa era is nearing its end. It’s been one hell of a 2025 season for the veteran quarterback. Everything that could go wrong has gone that way.

Miami lost Tyreek Hill to a dislocated left knee with multiple torn ligaments. The injury has ended his 2025 season. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s body language showed a team that is falling apart.

Tua Tagovailoa’s play on the field has not made things any better. It has long been rumored that he and Mike McDaniels are done after this season. McDaniels is likely to find another job. The same cannot be said for Tua.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, McDaniel said he’s considering a quarterback change.

Tua Tagovailoa Gets Benched

The end is near for Tua Tagovailoa. Miami is making a move at quarterback after Tagovailoa’s struggles continue.

On Wednesday, the Dolphins decided to bench their starting quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Replacing Tagovailoa will be rookie Quinn Ewers. He was selected in the seventh round of the draft this year.

Mike McDaniel stated the quarterback play was “not good enough” against Pittsburgh. He added that “everything” was on the table. That included replacing a quarterback who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2024.

Ewers spent one season at Ohio State before transferring to the University of Texas. That is where he made his name. He threw for 9,128 yards with 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in three seasons. Ewers now has a grand opportunity to keep the job beyond 2025.

Losing his job is one thing. But Tua Tagovailoa might lose his career as well. Not many teams will line up to sign a guy for millions with his injury history. Tua has had a disturbing number of concussions in his career.

The Dolphins are still on the hook for the majority of Tagovailoa’s four-year, $212 million contract. Nobody wants to pay a guy who might not be available to play half the time.

It might be time for Tua to think about his post-career life.
