The vibes around the Miami Dolphins are arguably the worst in the NFL at the start of the 2025 NFL season. Not only is the team 0-2 but many Dolphins fans are already calling for the firing of head coach Mike McDaniel.
The Phins’ head coach isn’t the only issue the fanbase has with the franchise, however, as they also seem ready to move on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who, at 27 years old, has shown no meaningful growth toward elite quarterbacking during his five seasons in the NFL.
The former #5 overall pick has gotten off to a mediocre start to the season, as well, as he’s completed 72.7% of his passes for 429 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, while also taking a whopping eight sacks in two games (which, granted, is not solely his fault).
Tua certainly doesn’t seem to be helping his case with his own comments, either, as he outright said that Buffalo Bills signal-caller Josh Allen is twice the quarterback he is ahead of their Thursday Night Football matchup tomorrow night.
“He’s top tier. If it’s not with his arm, it’s with his legs. That dude can do literally anything he wants,” Tua said of his AFC East QB counterpart during a press conference earlier this week.
“So, definitely different skill set for me. I can’t do half of what he does when it comes to running the ball and any of that, and then with how he can just chuck a ball down the field with how far and the arm strength that he has. He’s supreme when it comes to that. So it’s going to be fun to get to see him, get to play him again.”
Even if what Tagovailoa is saying is objectively true, it’s not something he should be saying out loud for a plethora of reasons. First and foremost, the Dolphins are 0-2, and as mentioned before, their vibes are atrocious, meaning it’s certainly not the time to admit that your competitor is better than you are.
Then on a more intangible level, football — and athletics, in general — purists will argue that the truly elite athletes always step on the field believing they are the best no matter who their competition is. By saying what he said, Tua has just told all of the guys he’ll be looking at in the huddle, “Sorry, fellas, but we’re in trouble today — I’m just not as good as #17.”
