The Miami Dolphins dropped to 1-5 on Sunday with a 29-27 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers on a last-second field goal, and starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa did not dance around the team’s issues during his postgame press conference.

After going 11-6 in 2023, the Dolphins took a step back in 2024 with an 8-9 record and then a further step in the wrong direction this season. Head coach Mike McDaniel feels as if he’s just playing out the string before being fired, and Tagovailoa’s days as a star quarterback seem long gone.

So, where did things go wrong? Tagovailoa has a good idea.

Tua Tagovailoa Calls Out Miami Dolphins For Lack Of Leadership Amid Terrible Start

Tagovailoa has his warts as a player. But one thing that has never come into question is his leadership, and that dates back to his time as a star for Nick Saban at Alabama.

After Miami’s loss, he pointed out that he hasn’t seen that same level of leadership from the rest of the Dolphins’ organization.

Tua Tagovailoa tells reporters that Dolphins players have been late and/or skipping players-only meetings in recent weeks.

“I think it starts with the leadership and helping articulate that for the guys,” Tagovailoa said. “And then what we’re expecting out of the guys, right? We’re expecting this, are we getting that, are we not getting that? We have guys showing up to player-only meetings late, guys not showing up to player-only meetings.

“There’s a lot that goes into that. Do we have to make that mandatory, do we not have to make this mandatory? So it’s a lot of things of that nature that we’ve gotta get cleaned up, and it starts with the little things like that.”

That lack of leadership has always been seen as McDaniel’s fatal flaw. The 42-year-old is the consummate “player’s coach,” which is great when the team is winning. But when things go south, sometimes a coach needs to step in and be the bad guy. It doesn’t appear McDaniel is comfortable doing that, and Miami is struggling in large part because of it.
