Look, Trevor Lawrence isn’t mad. But let’s just say if Travis Hunter ends up playing more defense than offense this season, the Jaguars quarterback might have a few things to say.
Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in 2025, is listed as a starting wide receiver and a backup cornerback on the Jaguars’ first unofficial depth chart. Yes, both. Just like college. But while the team plays it cool on how they’ll use him, Lawrence made his preference clear.
“He’s so talented, it’s hard to keep him off the field,” Lawrence said. “Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more.”
The Jaguars’ coaching staff continues to split Hunter’s training camp reps between receiver and corner. On paper, it makes sense. The former Colorado star dominated on both sides in college. But this isn’t the Pac-12 anymore.
Jacksonville needs help on offense. Last year, they tied for the third-fewest passing touchdowns in the league with just 19. They finished 4-13 and missed the playoffs again. And Lawrence knows Hunter can change that.
#Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence is campaigning for Travis Hunter to play more on offense:
“Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more and I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two? That’s a decision you have to make.’”

“I told him, ‘Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two? That’s a decision you have to make,’” Lawrence joked. “He’ll make plays wherever he is, but obviously as a quarterback I hope he plays more on offense.”
Hunter has already turned heads in camp with his speed and route-running. Lawrence hasn’t worked with him for long, but he’s seen enough to know Hunter can be a weapon.
“He will make us better,” Lawrence said. “Wherever he plays to make us better, I’m all for wherever that is. But yeah-catching touchdowns helps.”
As for the bigger picture, Trevor Lawrence believes the Jaguars can get back into the playoff hunt. But he didn’t sugarcoat it.
“You’ve got to go prove it on Sundays this fall,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter what I say. But I feel very confident in this team.”
Their first test comes on Sept. 7 at home against the Carolina Panthers. And when that ball kicks off, don’t be surprised if Lawrence looks for No. 12 early, and often.
