Trevon Diggs was one of the main storylines at the start of Dallas Cowboys training camp. Despite entering the session on the Physically Unable to Perform list, his effort was a talking point.

Jerry Jones called Diggs out for a lack of dedication to the organization. The defensive back quickly responded while pointing out the owner’s attempted deception.

Jones expressed regret with a decision to extend Diggs in 2023 while speaking to media members. The five-year, $97 million deal was mentioned as he spoke on ongoing negotiations surrounding another star player.

“Should we have waited to extend Diggs?” he asked in response to a question about a lengthy back-and-forth with Micah Parsons.

The cornerback has missed 21 games since signing that deal. He’s currently recovering from a knee injury.

The Cowboys are fining Trevon Diggs over his rehab.

“We expect a player that’s paid like Trevon to be here all the time… to be leading,” Jerry Jones said while addressing the media. He then confirmed a $500,000 fine will be handed down to Diggs.

The defender has a de-escalation clause written into his contract that says he can be punished for not participating in 84% of the offseason program.

Diggs chose to rehab privately rather than in the Cowboys‘ facility. He did not fulfill his contractual duties. Dallas didn’t have to enforce the clause, but it will.

Jones painted a picture of a lazy player failing to put in the required effort. Diggs wanted to set that narrative straight.

What was Diggs really doing?

They knew where I was rehabbing at. Was in full Communication with the therapist whole step of the way. I am not behind on my recovery process.

Jones insinuated that Diggs was not working to get back on the field. He questioned his leadership.

Diggs refuted the negative narratives at training camp this week. In fact, he says he reported early to get his knee back to 100%.

“I just felt like it was in my best interest to go somewhere to get the full, undivided attention I needed, massages and the whole nine yards, to better and further my career, to make sure I’m good, ahead of schedule and that I can perform well. Like [when I tore] my ACL, I came back a whole two months earlier because of the work I put in during the offseason, off the field.”

Trevon Diggs says he was “hurt” by Jerry Jones’ comments. He does, however plan to get his money back.

“It’s OK,” he said of the fine. “Hopefully I make it back in incentives.”

The $500,000 taken from the Cowboys will come from his $9 million base salary. Diggs will look to recoup his loss in the form of incentives, largely tied to individual performance.
