Hmmm.
The Cincinnati Bengals waived wide receiver Trenton Irwin to make way for linebacker Shaka Heyward on Monday. Later, Irwin took to Instagram to say goodbye to the city, but he ended his goodbye with a little twist.
“Mann the end of a beautiful chapter. Met so many wonderful people in this beautiful city. Fought for what I stand for and learned to be me through it all for me.”
So far, so good.
Then he added:
“When people no longer see you the way you see yourself, it’s a clear sign that it’s time to go. Excited to create my legacy elsewhere and keep chasing perfection like a shadow.”
That’s the part right there.
Irwin has been, unquestionably, a net positive for the Bengals’ offense in his time with the team. He quickly earned himself a spot, not only on special teams, but as a rotational receiver that Joe Burrow grew to rely on.
Unfortunately, despite Irwin’s contributions to the offense, he’s on the same team as Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas, and Jermaine Burton. They also have Mike Gesicki, who is more of a slot receiver than a tight end.
Irwin has three receptions on only 10 targets this season and has only been active for seven games. It’s clear the Bengals offense, which is definitely not the issue that has led to Cincinnati’s 4-8 record, is working well without him.
Hopefully he lands somewhere where he can be a reliable asset to a quarterback more in need of wide receivers.
