Trent Sherfield Sr.’s experience and ability on special teams should help him earn the sixth and final spot at wide receiver for the Denver Broncos.
The Denver Broncos have a talented group of wide receivers. If they all improve and show growth and development from last season, they have the potential to make a huge impact for the upcoming 2025 season.
The leader is longtime veteran Courtland Sutton. He will be the team’s top target again this coming season. However, the team boasts a handful of players that are competing hard to earning more target share in the team’s aerial attack. Alongside Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and Pat Bryant will round out the team’s top five at the position.
If the Broncos opt to follow last year’s roster building formula on their final 53-man roster, a sixth spot will be allocated for a receiver. That spot will be earned by someone who has extensive special teams' experience. During this year’s free agency period, the Broncos signed a wide receiver Trent Sherfield Sr. to a two-year, $6 million dollar deal with $3.25 million guaranteed.
Over the past seven seasons, Sherfield has logged over 3,300 snaps between offense and special teams. While he hasn’t made a huge impact on offense, he has been a steady contributor and lauded for his ability in the game’s third phase—a big reason why I believe he will earn the last roster spot at wide receiver.

The Broncos are the sixth different team Sherfield will have suited up for. With Tremon Smith heading to the Houston Texans in free agency, I believe Sherfield is the player to watch to replace him as the main gunner on special teams.
Since being drafted out of Vanderbilt in the 2018 NFL Draft, the veteran wider receiver has appeared in 112 games with 11 starts. In his career to date, he has hauled in 86 receptions for 1,013 yards and six touchdowns. Overall, he has played 2,126 snaps on offense and 1,252 snaps on special teams.
Sherfield has made some big plays throughout training camp. He caught the eye of Head Coach Sean Payton, who recently praised him for his performance with the team thus far.
“He’s tough, and he can run. The other thing he can do is block, and so we’ve always had a handful of receivers that can run and stretch the field and when you get one that can do that and then block also, you can set up play action, marries well to the run game. He’s pretty competitive,” stated Payton.
