PITTSBURGH — Tre Flowers had wrapping paper and scotch tape in hand when his phone rang, an opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers on the line.
“It was Christmas Eve. I was trying to (get ahead of) my daughters getting up so they could see stuff under the tree, and that’s how it happened,” the eighth-year cornerback said on Friday after practice. “I said, ‘Pack your bags.’ I gotta spend Christmas with my kids, so I’ve got my wife and kids up here.”
Flowers brought two or three of the presents along with him to Pittsburgh. The rest of them are waiting for his daughters when they get home. Meanwhile, he said being with the Steelers is the “best situation you could be in. … I wanna help a team win, help a team get to the Super Bowl again. That’s my goal.”
Flowers helped the Bengals reach Super Bowl LVI. He jumps on board with the Steelers while Brandin Echols is dealing with an injury, and the secondary is thinner than usual.
Flowers has played in 97 games as a pro, starting 44. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft and spent the first three-plus seasons of his career with them.
Flowers has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals (2021-22), Atlanta Falcons (2023), Jacksonville Jaguars (2024), Indianapolis Colts (2024) and Detroit Lions (2025). He’s registered four interceptions, 22 passes defended and 287 combined tackles.
“I always pride myself on just trying to study,” Flowers said. “So I always just try to start fresh. That’s exactly how I’ll attack it here. This defense, it’s a little different than all the other places I’ve been, so I guess this will be a little bit more of a challenge. But I’m ready for it.”
