Travis Kelce has discussed a traumatic period of his young life, opening up on his parents’ split and expressing an unwillingness to go through something similar with Taylor Swift.
The Kansas City Chiefs star is involved in a blossoming romance with the pop sensation and only recently posted photos of them together for the first time.
Travis and his older brother Jason were attending college at Cincinnati when their parents went their separate ways. Ed and Donna Kelce have admitted that they stayed together longer than they wanted to so they could be the best parents to their boys.
The tight end was interviewed by GQ this offseason and told the publication he sensed something was off around their 20th anniversary, as it was a regular day for his folks, given what he’d grown used to.
“I don’t want to get this wrong, it had to be around 20 (20th wedding anniversary),” he recalled.
“I remember seeing it and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s their anniversary. I wonder what they’re going to do.’ And it was kind of just another day almost. Another day of knocking out things for the kids.”
Kelce says he’s sure his dad did something, though he didn’t seem to have any idea what.
“I’m sure my father probably did something, he’s always been very good at making sure we celebrate our mother when it’s Mother’s Day and all that,” he explained. “He still to this day will text, like, ‘Hey, it’s your mom’s birthday coming up. Don’t forget about it. But I never saw the romance of it all.”
Travis Kelce also confessed to feelings of envy seeing friends whose parents remained together.
“A lot of friends I grew up with shared that (seeing their parents happy). The handful of my friends whose parents are still together and still thriving – those are situations I would love to have. Not that I think my parents dealt with it the wrong way or anything like that.”
“It’s more so, if we’re gonna start this and do it, why not try and do it to last forever? Not just in a ‘It’s just for the kids’ aspect,” he lamented.
The three-time Super Bowl winner would compare his mother to his current partner, noting their similarities and talking up their “kindness, their genuineness, their ability to say hello to everyone in the room.”
“I’ve seen Taylor do the exact same thing of setting goals for herself and exceeding the expectations and really captivating the world in that regard,” he said.
Kelce’s emotional outpouring comes on the back of his father’s girlfriend passing away.
Ed revealed in a Facebook post that his longtime partner, Maureen Maguire, whom he met after splitting with Donna, died earlier this month. She was buried in Pennsylvania last Thursday.
