Will Travis Hunter, the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, play both wide receiver and cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars? Hunter says that he wants to, and the Jaguars say he will, but videos from his first practices with the team are raising questions about how genuine they are about him doing so.
“It’s never playing football again. Because I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it,’ Hunter said when asked before the draft what it would it mean if a team told him he could only play on one side of the ball. “I just feel very confident in myself, and I got a competitive spirit that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I feel like I can do it.”
However, all the clips that the Jaguars have released of Hunter thus far have pictured him playing wide receiver.

Some fans suggest that this is just a matter of necessity. Hunter is significantly less refined at the wide receiver position than he is at the cornerback position. So it stands to reason that Jacksonville would want him to practice significantly more on the offensive side of the ball. But if you’re going to play full-time on both sides of the ball in the NFL, you probably need significant practice reps on both sides as well.
Which is exactly why Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh doesn’t think it’s possible.
“It’s gonna be interesting to see how they do it, wherever he goes,” Harbaugh said prior to the NFL Draft. “But to say that you’re gonna be completely immersed in everything that there is to know on offense and everything there is to know on defense, I don’t know if there’s enough hours in the day for a player to be able to do that, and to have every detail locked down.”
Maybe Hunter can defy the odds. To his point, he’s been doing so for many years now. But the NFL is a different beast, and he’d have to be the ultimate mold-breaker to make it work.
