Travis Hunter received a crash course in the downfalls of fame while emerging as the best college football player in the country during his time at Colorado. He’ll be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, and he’s not taking any chances after revealing he’s hired his own personal bodyguard after wrapping up his time with the Buffaloes.

It’s been a long time since the college football world has seen a player like Travis Hunter, and we’re probably having to wait a while to see another one who’s able to dazzle like the two-way superstar who certainly deserved the Heisman Trophy he secured while playing more than 1,300 snaps during his junior (and final) season at Colorado under Deion Sanders.

The 21-year-old found himself dealing with some unwanted attention thanks to what transpired at the ceremony where he received the hallowed trophy, as the internet managed to whip itself into a frenzy by overanalyzing the behavior of his fiancée during and after the event.

Hunter swiftly came to her defense before temporarily deactivating his Instagram account (he’s only uploaded a single post since resurfacing toward the start of January and opted to turn off the comments). He’s currently gearing up for the NFL Draft, and he’s expected to be one of the first players selected from a class where Miami’s Cam Ward and Penn State’s Abdul Carter Jr. accompany him near the top of most projections.

During the most recent episode of The Travis Hunter Show, the eponymous co-host shed some light on the downsides of being in his position while noting he’s become increasingly hesitant to take pictures with fans due to his inability to control the narrative after the fact.

He also revealed he’s decided to hire his own bodyguard out of an abundance of caution while alluding to the reasons he decided to go that route.

Here’s what he had to say:

“People scare me, because you never know who’s got good intentions. It can always go left at any moment.

But it’s all good because I got Frank the Tank; I got a new security guard, y’all. Y’all gonna meet him soon…Spend that money in the right place. Now I can stay alive for 100 years.”

Hunter can certainly afford to go that route based on the NIL money he racked up in college along with the hefty contract he’ll undoubtedly be receiving once he officially heads to the NFL, but it’s kind of a shame he felt the need to do so in the first place.
