Training Camp Winners & Losers from Day 11: 2 players continue to shine
Niners Nation Niners Nation

Before Day 11 of training camp for the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced the release of wide receiver Andy Isabella (ankle) and the re-signing of wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown as the team shuffles the number seven. Here’s a quick rundown of the injury report before we get into the winners and losers.

Running back Christian McCaffrey and left tackle Trent Williams returned to the practice field, while edge rusher Nick Bosa worked off to the side with what has been described as “soreness.”

Offensive tackle Andre Dillard worked off on the side field and looks close to returning to practice, per Rob Lowder. Running Jordan James returned to practice, which is a welcome sight given the update with running Isaac Guerendo, who will miss a few weeks with a shoulder injury.

Wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Jacob Cowing missed Tuesday’s session along with fullback Kyle Juszczyk (Achilles), S Ji’Ayir Brown (ankle), DE Sam Okuayinonu (groin), DT Kevin Givens (pectoral), and DT Evan Anderson.

Let’s go over the winners and loser from Tuesday’s practice.

WINNERS

Upton Stout

The nickel cornerback position has taken shape with the rookie leading the pack. Each day brings a new positive report. Stout and Ricky Pearsall continue to battle at practice, with each stealing a win against the other. Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh stopped short of crowning the rookie as the winner of the nickel corner competition. Saleh said Stout has the inside track in a very long race, but the word is out. It would take a collapse in Stout’s play, which continues to grow with each rep, or an injury to knock the kid out of the spot.

Ricky Pearsall

Another practice, another big performance from the second-year receiver. Pearsall continues his rapport with Brock Purdy and had another big day catching everything in sight. Lowder charted the connection at 5/6 with many sizable gains. Thursday’s joint practice against Denver will be an amazing test for Pearsall as he will contend with Patrick Surtain II and Jahdae Barron. The one question left to answer for Ricky is how he will respond to the physicality of press-man coverage.

Brock Purdy/Mac Jones

Purdy continues to shine with Pearsall and George Kittle, but Mac Jones has turned heads with his efficiency and ball placement. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner charted Jones as 14/15 with his final pass finally falling incomplete with a pass intended for TE Brayden Willis. Purdy finished at 10/15 with a touchdown to Kittle in the red zone, and an interception to S Richie Grant. Ultimately, Purdy’s best throw was a PBU by Upton Stout up the sideline intended for Christian McCaffrey. Denver’s defense will be a fine test for both signal callers.

Losers

Jake Moody

Even with the release of Greg Joseph, Moody is still in a competition. Kyle Shanahan talked about how every kicker competes, given how close Joseph is to returning at any moment. Moody made five of his six attempts with a miss from 55 yards off the crossbar. The...
