Dallas Cowboys reserve signal caller Joe Milton is turning head at training camp this offseason. It’s a storyline synonymous with second-year passer.

Milton has been a one-man highlight reel while lining up against both his own team and opposing defenses. Still, he remains second on the depth chart behind Dak Prescott.

Milton was drafted in 2024 by the New England Patriots. He played in one game while backing up rookie Drake Maye.

Lore surrounding the rocket-armed quarterback has followed since his time at Michigan and Tennessee.

He has all the physical tools. For one reason or another, regular season success has proven elusive.

Joe Milton reigns as training camp champ.

He shines in a practice setting. Look no further than his NFL Combine performance in the spring of 2024.

Milton was seen launching footballs left and right, hitting receivers in stride. He showcased his unrivaled arm strength with a casual 80-yard bomb on his final throw.

Despite the Combine performance, he fell to the sixth round. College production played a large part.

As a starter at Michigan, he was just 2-3. He completed less than 57% of his attempts in his final season while tossing as many touchdowns as interceptions.

Success saw an uptick after a transfer to Tennessee, where he went 11-5 with 32 scores and just five picks. Still, too often he was seen missing open receivers or failing to take speed off of his throws when necessary.

He played in one game as an NFL rookie, recording the second-hardest pass in NFL history at 67.71 MPH on a play that didn’t count.

It remains his only regular season action as a pro.

Will that change in 2025?

If training camp is any indication, then yes. He’s been downright dominant thus far after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

He’s been carving up the Dallas secondary on every occasion. By many accounts, he’s been the most impressive passer on the roster.

It unfortunately hasn’t changed his standing in the quarterback room. He remained QB2 in the team’s unofficial depth chart release.

He hasn’t let that designation stop him from performing. He went viral during a recent scrimmage against the Rams.

Joe Milton will get another chance to pick that Los Angeles secondary apart in his preseason debut. He’s expected to take first-team reps for the Dallas offense in Game 1.

Another strong performance might turn up the heat on Dak Prescott. We’ll see if he can shake the narrative that currently surrounds him and make an impact in the regular season.
