The Tennessee Titans weren’t satisfied with what they had seen from head coach Brian Callahan, going 4-19 across 23 games. That includes a 1-5 record this season, making the Titans one of the NFL’s worst teams. The Titans fired coach Callahan after last week’s loss, leading to Mike McCoy taking over on an interim basis.
While the Titans had a new head coach on Sunday, the end result was the same, with Tennessee falling 31-13 to the New England Patriots. Tennessee did show signs of progress early on, and even led the Patriots 10-3 in the first quarter. But they still play four quarters, and Tennessee wasn’t able to slow down a strong performance from Drake Maye.
The Titans are now 1-6, further cementing their status as a rebuilding team that won’t be headed anywhere this season. Thus, other teams recognize where the Titans are, and promptly tried trading for one of their best players once Callahan was fired.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans fielded trade inquiries from multiple teams regarding the availability of Jeffery Simmons. Though teams were told that the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle is “not available.”
Simmons will be under contract through the 2027 season. While other teams would love to add the defensive stalwart to their roster, the Titans clearly view him as a building block for years to come. Yet, that likely won’t prevent teams from trying again as the NFL trade deadline approaches on the Tuesday following Week 9. Or again in the offseason if their attempts fall flat once again later this season.
