Would this be a deal worth making?
NFL free agency is a few weeks away. The 2025 NFL Draft is still more than two months from now. It is speculation season for the NFL’s non-Super Bowl teams, and everyone has an idea for how to fix the New York Giants’ dire quarterback situation.
Some are valid. Some are, shall we say, outside the box. Bleacher Report recently provided one of those outside the box ideas. Trading for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith.
That would be ironic, since it was Smith who started in place of Manning in the 2017 game that ended Manning’s consecutive start streak at 210 games, and was the beginning of the end for coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese.
But, would it be crazy?
The trade:
Bleacher Report says:
It really doesn’t feel like the Giants’ current regime really has the leeway to wait for a rookie quarterback to develop. Even if they can guarantee that either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders will be available at No. 3, they aren’t quite the same caliber as Drake Maye and Caleb Williams from a year ago.
Brian Daboll has yet to have a good quarterback since taking the Giants’ job. It’s time that he gets a chance to prove himself with a quarterback who can win right now. Geno Smith might just be the best quarterback who could be available via trade.
This deal would give the Seahawks an opportunity to draft one of the top talents in the draft while putting Geno Smith’s contract on the Giants books. It would also still leave the Giants with two draft picks to improve the overall roster.
Personally, I can’t do this. Yes, Smith made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023 as he has experienced a career resurgence. Yes, he is a good player who can play winning football. The Seahawks are 27-22 in his regular season starts the past three seasons.
Smith carries a $14.8 million base salary into the 2025 season and can be a free agent after it.
Entering his age 35 season, is Smith worth it? Does he move the needle enough to justify giving up the third overall pick for perhaps one season? Does he move the needle enough to save Daboll’s job?
I am also not sure what the reason is for surrendering Eluemunor.
This trade is not for me.
