Behind the Steel Curtain
Free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was cleared to return to football this week after undergoing spinal fusion surgery over the offseason, and he’s setting up visits with multiple NFL teams to decide where his next stop should be.
One of those teams is the Steelers.
Per a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Samuel is set to meet with the Carolina Panthers today, the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings on Friday, the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, and finally, the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday — his sixth and final stop as of right now.
Samuel was a second-round pick in 2021 by the Los Angeles Chargers. He played college football at Florida State. He’s the son of two-time Super Bowl champion cornerback Asante Samuel Sr.
Samuel Jr. has played in 50 career games, starting 47. In his last full season, 2023, he made 63 total tackles, 13 passes defensed, and two interceptions.
The 5’10, 180-pound cornerback ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at his FSU pro day. He has slot/boundary versatility.
