For the fourth time since 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for a new head coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down following a 19-year tenure. Replacing a coach who will be discussed as a potential future Hall of Fame inductee won’t be easy.

Though after zero playoff wins in the past nine seasons, some are eager to see who will coach the Steelers next. Less than an hour after Tomlin stepped down, a strong candidate has already emerged in Pittsburgh.

In the aftermath of the Tomlin news, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported, “It would not be a surprise if Brian Flores, who was in Pittsburgh in 2022, gets a real look by the Steelers.”

A high-level executive told Schultz, “That makes too much sense.”

Flores has been the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator since 2023, leading one of the most pressure-heavy defenses in the NFL. Yet, now his contract is up, and he’s available for anyone to hire as a defensive coordinator, though the Vikings want him back in that same role.

Of course, Flores has done well enough in Minnesota to garner interest in being an NFL head coach again. He’s already interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens’ vacancy, and now, with the Steelers being another option, Pittsburgh could circle back to their linebackers coach from 2022.
