Amid increasing criticism from fans, former NFL quarterback Tony Romo doesn’t seem to be in trouble with CBS Sports. The Dallas Cowboys icon’s performance in the booth has decreased in recent years to the point that fans want him and Jim Nantz demoted.

After joining the company in 2017, Romo delighted fans with his commentary. More famously, he used to predict offensive plays before they happened, which became his signature move when calling games. Nine years into his broadcasting career, things have changed for Romo.

Many fans wanted him demoted from the No. 1 broadcast crew and replaced by another former NFL star, J.J. Watt. However, that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon, as Romo remains safe for the foreseeable future.

Tony Romo’s CBS Sports Job Is Safe For The 2026 NFL Season

Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reported on Saturday that people within CBS Sports are frustrated with the criticism aimed at Romo, calling it a media narrative against the four-time Pro Bowler. He is under contract until 2030. After that, he could pursue different goals, McCarthy added.

“As for those calling for Romo to be demoted or dumped, here’s a reality check. CBS has a Super Bowl in 2028. Romo’s under contract through 2030. He’s not going anywhere,” McCarthy wrote. “After 2030, who knows? Romo’s a scratch golfer who’s won many celebrity events. At age 50, he might be as likely to try out for the Champions Tour as stay in sports TV.”

Tony Romo was under fire for his comments during the Buffalo Bills’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Barstool Sports’ founder Dave Portnoy even accused him of being on drugs. The situation doesn’t look favorable on the outside, but Romo isn’t going anywhere.
