After trimming their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, the New England Patriots made several moves on Wednesday that caught fans’ attention. Perhaps the most noteworthy of the bunch saw them claim former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito off of waivers.

DeVito didn’t hear his name called in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he ended up landing with the Giants as a depth option behind Daniel Jones. After getting thrust into action as a rookie, DeVito quickly became a viral sensation with New York.

In 2023, DeVito showed off his potential, throwing for 1,101 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games, six of which were starts. He didn’t enjoy as much success last season, throwing for just 257 yards in three games, two of which were starts.

With the Giants adding Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart to their quarterback room this offseason, there wasn’t room for DeVito on the roster. After landing with the Pats, DeVito penned a goodbye letter to his old team, while also saying how excited he is to get to work with New England.

“My journey with the New York Giants was more than football — it was about family, community, and a dream come true for a Jersey kid,” DeVito said in a post on Instagram. “I’ll forever be grateful to the organization and fans who welcomed me with open arms. New York will always be home. Excited for this next chapter in New England!”

With the Patriots, DeVito will slot in as the No. 3 quarterback behind second-year starter Drake Maye and veteran backup Joshua Dobbs. If he finds his way onto the field, DeVito has proven he can hold his own under center when called upon.

After rolling with Ben Wooldridge as their No. 3 quarterback throughout training camp, it’s clear DeVito is a major upgrade over him. However, with Maye and Dobbs ahead of him on the depth chart, it would take a couple of things going wrong in order for him to find his way onto the field in 2025.
