Tommy DeVito talked with reporters on Thursday for the first time since joining the New England Patriots.
The former undrafted quarterback was cut by the New York Giants on Tuesday was claimed by the Patriots on Wednesday.
“DeVito on coming to New England: ‘It was something that I had a feeling it was going to happen, something that I was hoping was going to happen, especially with where they were ranked in the claims order, so I was very excited to get here,'” Christopher Price of the Boston Globe posted on Bluesky.
After going undrafted in 2023, DeVito signed with the Giants and joined their practice squad that October. The former Illinois and Syracuse product helped make NFL history that November, when he became the 10th rookie quarterback to start a game that season.
DeVito took Giants fans by storm that fall, leading the team to three wins in six starts and finishing the year with 1,103 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions across nine games. DeVito went 31-for-44 with 257 passing yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions during three games (two starts) in the 2024 season.
The 27-year-old also discussed joining offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense on Thursday, as well as his nickname, “Tommy Cutlets.”
“DeVito on a Josh McDaniels offense: ‘We had a little bit of conversation today, but it’s not too drastic from where I came from. Coach Daboll was with the Patriots in the past. And things have changed a little bit, but it’s not as far off as I thought it might have been,” Price posted on Bluesky. “DeVito asked about his nickname and if his Mom will be living with him here: ‘I’ve learned there are a lot of Italians in the area. … No, my mother will not be coming to live with me, so I’ll be alone again. But I hear there’s a lot of good Italian food, so I’m looking forward to trying it out.'”
