PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers will not make any significant changes to their coaching staff after a brutal 26-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills, head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday.
In his weekly press conference at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, Tomlin was asked if he will make changes to the distribution of labor of his coaching staff, and he said that he will not.
“Not anything that merits discussion in this setting, no,” he said.
The timing of the crippling loss to the Bills, during which Buffalo ran for 249 yards against the Steelers’ defense, is not ideal, as the Steelers are moving right into another crucial test as they visit the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.
It’s possible that the timing — the Steelers had an early bye this season after their Week 4 trip to Ireland, and their only Thursday Night Football game came in Week 7. Since then, they’ve had a test every week, giving precious little time for big picture adjustments.
Tomlin has made it happen in the past, though. During the 2023 season, the Steelers fired Matt Canada on Tuesday, Nov. 21, two days after a road loss to the Cleveland Browns and five days before a critical road contest at the Cincinnati Bengals.
With running backs coach Eddie Faulkner and quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan sharing Canada’s offensive coordinator duties, the Steelers defeated the Bengals, 16-10 at Paycor Stadium.
They finished the season 4-3 under the co-interim coordinators after starting the year 6-4. The Steelers lost to the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs that season.
While Tomlin has made it work in the past, any changes to his coaching staff won’t be happening this week.
