Despite complaints over a conflict of interest, Tom Brady says that he has no plans on stepping back from either his role as a commentator for FOX or his role as a team owner for the Las Vegas Raiders.

In the most recent edition of his newsletter, Brady explained why he has no issue taking on both roles, and why he doesn’t believe that one necessarily compromises his ability to do the other.

“I love football. At its core it is a game of principles. And with all the success it has given me, I feel I have a moral and ethical duty to the sport; Brady wrote. “Which is why the point where my roles in it intersect is not actually a point of conflict, despite what the paranoid and distrustful might believe. Rather, it’s the place from which my ethical duty emerges: to grow, evolve, and improve the game that has given me everything.”

Former Players Have Called On Tom Brady To Step Down From Broadcasting Role

Brady’s comments come amid calls for him to step down from former players turned media members. Both Ryan Clark and Brady’s former teammate, Rodney Harrison, have stated that Brady’s role as a commentator gives him an unfair advantage in his role as a Raiders owner.

“I played 15 years in the league, but I’ve been a broadcaster for 17 years. And it’s definitely a conflict of interest,” Harrison said. “…And Tom Brady’s a smart dude. He’s gonna use this. He’s gonna use it. It’s human nature to use the information. If he talks to Howie Roseman, or Howie tells him how he builds a team, you don’t think he’s going to take that back to the Raiders and use the same thing? And just think about free agency. If somebody told him, ‘Oh, this guy’s not very tough.’ When that guy becomes a free agent, he already knows, ‘Hey, I’m gonna back away from that.’ So, it’s definitely a conflict of interest.”

Brady’s defense, while admirable, doesn’t exactly hold up very well. Loving football doesn’t suddenly make the conflict of interest disappear. And in order to do both jobs, one necessarily must compromise the other.

Either you are not helping the Raiders to the best of your ability, given the information at hand, or you’re unable to remain impartial both in your broadcasting and information gathering.

It doesn’t appear as if the NFL has any plans to step in and tell Brady to pick one. But it sure seems as if the league should do so.
