“Back in my day…” is one of those phrases former athletes of all levels love to say to today’s athletes. Pretty much no former athlete is immune from doing it at one point or another. Case in point: Tom Brady thinks that today’s NFL players are more “coddled” than they were when he played the game.
Brady said this on the new episode of comedian Kevin Hart’s Cold as Balls show. Reminder: Tom Brady last played in the NFL just three years ago, so it’s not like he has been retired for very long.
“Do you feel like the game is changing? Do you feel like the game is improving? What’s your take on the game today?” Hart asked the Fox broadcaster as, for some reason, they were each using handheld microphones while sitting in their respective ice tubs.
“I think there’s more challenges for the generation of quarterbacks in some ways, but for the guys that take advantage of it, I think it’s more opportunities for them, too,” Brady replied, adding, “I think there’s a lot of opportunity for them to succeed and at the same time there’s challenges because there’s a lot more distractions than everyone.
“Everyone is coddled a little bit more,” he continued. “Whereas opposed to saying, ‘Hey, you better come in and get the work done,’ it’s kind of like, ‘Hey, you probably should do this.’ The guys that are really going to have the great work ethic, they’re going to really be able to succeed.”

When asked by Kevin Hart which players he feels have that sort of work ethic today, the first name Tom Brady said was Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “He has a will to win,” said Brady. “He’s got a desire every time he takes the field to be a great leader. It’s just everything he says is the right thing.”
Just last month, Patrick Mahomes opened up about advice he had gotten from Tom Brady, and said that he and Brady have talked a “good amount” this offseason.
“He didn’t have to be like that. He’s such a good dude, and I have so much respect for him, and I’ll take any advice he gives me,” Mahomes revealed. He also said Brady impressed upon him that “guys can spot when you’re not authentic and you’re not putting in the work,” so that’s become one of his main focuses.
