Patrick Mahomes‘ questionable tactics as they relate to drawing penalties has been top of mind this postseason. Tom Brady was asked about the topic ahead of the AFC Championship.

He says the current rules that penalize defenses for hitting quarterbacks are a “disservice to the game.” That opinion is shared by viewers who believe Mahomes is wrongfully taking advantage of his opposition.

In his most recent contest against the Texans, Mahomes was the beneficiary of two flags that involved unnecessary roughness. One controversial roughing the passer call early in the game overturned a third-down stop and allowed the Chiefs to drive down the field on their way to three points.

In the second half, Houston was penalized for hitting Mahomes after a very late slide. It turned a Texans sack into a fresh set of downs for Kansas City, who’d later score a touchdown on the possession.

The calls helped lead to 10 points in a game the Chiefs won 23-14. They might’ve directly impacted the outcome!

Maybe the most egregious play, however, was one that didn’t get flagged. Patrick Mahomes admittedly flopped while attempting to bait officials into another personal foul call. They didn’t fall for the acting job, but it showed that Mahomes is fully aware of referees’ tendency to penalize hits to the quarterback.

Tom Brady wasn’t a fan of the flop. He discussed Mahomes’ questionable tactics while on the Colin Cowherd Show this week.

Brady says the league is doing a “disservice to the game” with its attempts to protect quarterbacks. The NFL’s gone too far, the future Hall of Famer insists.

He notes that while the league is doing its best to limit QB contact, offenses are running their QBs than ever before. Defenses are in a no-win situation. They have to tackle the ball carrier without hitting them hard, late, or in the wrong area. And they have to read the minds of those signal callers to determine if they’ll slide, run out of bounds, or run through a tackler.

Tom Brady wants to see the rules addressed this offseason. Patrick Mahomes‘ actions are a big reason why. His exploitation of the rulebook is ruining viewers’ pleasure.
