Tom Brady is getting slammed online after making certain comments about American soccer.

A seven-time Super Bowl winner, Brady is quite the football expert. It’s why he’s the lead NFL commentator at FOX Sports and is being paid over $37 million a year.

The former quarterback is also a minority owner in the Las Vegas Raiders organization, but he’s also involved in soccer, having bought a minority stake in English club Birmingham City.

With the FIFA Club World Cup being hosted in the United States and the World Cup set to play out there next year, Americans are getting their fill of soccer. As such, Brady joined the ‘Men in Blazers’ podcast recently, where he suggested that the States simply need a young generational talent to become a powerhouse in the sport, given that the MLS is mainly viewed as a destination for aging stars.

“We need a young phenom like a Lamine Yamal, a young Lionel Messi, to take over,” Brady said. “And I believe that there will be the most amazing kind of cultural revolution for soccer here in America. We love rooting for winners. We love rooting for the best of the best.”

Fans on social media thought Brady was being Captain Obvious there. Even J.J. Watt took a swipe at him. Watt, of course, owns an English soccer team, having bought into Burnley.

“‘The Wisconsin Badgers need a player like prime Tom Brady,'” the former defensive end wrote.

“Players like Messi and Yamal don’t grow on trees,” another user said. “Every country in the world trying to develop one. Nobody succeeding.”

“Can’t believe the USMNT hasn’t thought of this yet,” someone else shared.

“He looks stupid and uneducated,” one user spewed.

“The USA simply needs to get one of the best soccer players in the history of the world. Not sure why they haven’t thought of this before,” a comment read.

Brady’s take may be oversimplified, but he’s not wrong about U.S. soccer needing a marquee talent as its face.

On the other hand, it’s not as simple as it sounds, or else it would have been done a long time ago.
