Mike McCoy is planning on simplifying the offense for Cam Ward, according to Adam Schefter. The Tennessee Titans’ interim coach plans to focus on the things that Ward does well and maximize those. That feels like a really smart first move for him to make.

It sounds like Brian Callahan tried to throw everything at Ward from the jump. That makes sense on one hand, because he probably figured that with Ward’s work ethic and the adaptability he showed in college, he could handle it. That obviously wasn’t working out.

On the other hand, part of the reason Callahan isn’t here anymore is that he couldn’t see that what he was trying to do wasn’t working. This year was always all about Ward’s development. Callahan failed there by not leaning into the things that Cam is comfortable with. Sure, maybe long-term there would need to be more depth to the offense, but it doesn’t have to all happen in year one. Vince Young won a Rookie of the Year award by pump faking and running to his right on every single play. Teams took that away the next year, and he struggled. I say that to point out that you can do a few things really well and succeed in the short-term.

Hopefully, this means the Titans are going to come out in shotgun and run tempo from the jump today.
