If this team is going to be a Super Bowl contender, it needs more consistency from the players near the line of scrimmage on defense.
In retrospect, the job that Jeff Hafley did with the Green Bay Packers’ defense last season was truly impressive. The first-year defensive coordinator cobbled together a top-10 defense despite having an inconsistent pass rush, a largely absent number one cornerback, and some questionable depth, leading the team to a 6th-place finish in points allowed per game.
This season, the expectations are even higher. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper heads into year two fresh off a fantastic rookie season, and the rest of the key players have had another offseason to absorb Hafley’s scheme and continue developing. Jaire Alexander may be gone, but a new defensive line coach is in to bring the pass rush back up to a more acceptable level.
So while there are still questions about the Packers’ cornerback unit, the front seven needs to step up their game this fall to take some pressure off the secondary and put it on opposing quarterbacks. If they can do that, the sky is the limit for Matt LaFleur’s squad.
